Composed in 1992, the words of this song are loosely based on a ghost story written or collected by Lafcadio Hearn around 1900 and included in the film ‘Kwaidan’ directed by Kobayashi in 1967. It’s a wonderful film, with a score by Toru Takemitsu: I recommend it.
The story tells of a happy couple; he leaves her to find his fortune; he finds wealth but not happiness; he returns to her; she welcomes him home……..but this is a ghost story.
